Sport New Zealand Ihi Aotearoa is the Crown agency responsible for system leadership of play, active recreation and sport in Aotearoa New Zealand. Guided by the vision Every Body Active, Sport NZ works to ensure the sport system contributes positively to national wellbeing and provides quality experiences for participants at all levels.
About Sport NZ
Sport NZ stewards the play, active recreation and sport system across Aotearoa New Zealand. Its work focuses on supporting participation, development, performance and wellbeing through a system-based and partnership-driven approach.
Within coaching, Sport NZ is committed to strengthening coach development systems and ensuring that coaching supports positive, inclusive and participant-centred experiences. This approach recognises the important role coaches play not only in performance, but also in creating environments where people can enjoy sport, develop and thrive.
Alignment with ICCE
Sport NZ’s values closely align with ICCE’s mission to lead and develop sport coaching globally. Both organisations recognise the importance of strong coaching systems, international collaboration, and the development of coaches and coach developers.
Sport NZ’s approach to coaching is grounded in system leadership, partnership and quality experiences. Its focus on sustainable coach development systems, inclusive practice and participant-centred coaching reflects ICCE’s belief that high-quality coaching can improve wellbeing, performance and positive sport experiences around the world.
ICCE Membership Impact
“ICCE membership has provided Sport New Zealand with access to a trusted global network of coaching system leaders, enabling the exchange of knowledge, research and good practice across countries. Through ICCE, we have strengthened our system-level thinking about coach development, learned from international practices, and contributed New Zealand insights to global conversations on sustainable, inclusive and high-quality coaching systems.”
— Andy Rogers, National Coach Lead, Sport NZ
Featured Initiative
Sport NZ is currently helping prepare for the ICCE Global Coach Conference 2027, which will take place in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington from 25–28 November 2027.
The conference will bring together coach developers, researchers, system leaders and practitioners from around the world to share knowledge, advance inclusive and values-based coaching, and collaborate on the future of sustainable coaching systems.
Sport NZ also continues to promote Balance is Better, an approach that supports quality sport experiences for young people. The Balance is Better website provides resources, guidance and practical tools to help parents, coaches, administrators and sport organisations create environments that support long-term participation, development and wellbeing.
