ICCE Member Spotlight: Lithuanian Sports University

Lithuanian Sports University (LSU) is a specialised public higher education institution with a long history in sport, leisure and health sciences. Founded in 1934, LSU has developed strong academic and research traditions and is recognised as a leading centre for sport science in the Baltic Sea region.

About Lithuanian Sports University

LSU contributes to the sustainable development of society through international-level research, academic excellence and the preparation of specialists in sport science and related fields. The university offers study programmes across all three study cycles, with a strong connection between studies, research and practical application.

Although LSU is a relatively small institution, with approximately 1,500 students and 175 teaching and research staff members, it has a strong international presence. The university maintains more than 90 international partnerships with universities and higher education institutions across Europe and beyond, and is involved in a wide range of international sport, education and research networks.

Alignment with ICCE

LSU’s work aligns closely with ICCE’s mission to lead and develop sport coaching globally. As a university focused on sport science, coach education and applied research, LSU contributes to the development of knowledge, professional practice and international collaboration within coaching.

LSU has been a member of ICCE since 2016, and its connection to ICCE reflects a shared commitment to strengthening coach education, supporting evidence-informed practice and creating opportunities for knowledge exchange across the global coaching community.

ICCE Membership Impact

Through ICCE membership, LSU has been able to participate in Global Coach Conferences, contribute to international coaching conversations and remain connected to developments in coaching education worldwide.

A major milestone came in 2024, when LSU achieved full ICCE endorsement for its Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Coaching. This recognition highlights the quality of LSU’s coach education provision and its alignment with international standards in coaching education.

ICCE membership has also supported LSU’s involvement in wider governance and collaboration, with Irena Cikotiene serving as Chair of the ICCE Inspection Committee and participating in ICCE board meetings.

Featured Initiative

LSU is currently promoting its sport science study programmes taught in English, as well as its ongoing sport conferences and annual Sport Forum.

The university welcomes outstanding coaches, sport science researchers and international partners to engage with its academic and professional activities. Through these initiatives, LSU continues to support the exchange of knowledge between research, coach education and sport practice.

LSU has also been actively involved in the iCoachGirls project, supporting efforts to increase girls’ participation in sport and strengthen coaching environments for girls and women.
