The International Council for Coaching Excellence, the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations and Leeds Metropolitan University launched version 1.2 of the International Sport Coaching Framework during proceedings at the Global Coach Conference hosted by the South African Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee in Durban on 11th September 2013.
The launch took place in front of a 400 plus audience gathered in the auditorium of the Coastlands Hotel in Durban for such a momentous occasion. It was the culmination of a two-year project led by ICCE, ASOIF and LMU and supported by very significant partners such as Olympic Solidarity, the World Anti-Doping Agency and the International Olympic Committee’s Entourage Commission.
Publication of version 1.2 follows the consultation and review process put in motion after the launch of version 1.1 during the London Olympic and Paralympic Games. This included comments submitted from all four corners of the world as well as special meetings with key partners and the 30-strong working group representing international federations, national lead agencies, the research community and coaching practitioners. The framework is published by Human Kinetics, ICCE’s publications partner.
The International Sport Coaching Framework marks a watershed in the history of coaching globally by providing an internationally recognised reference point for the development of coaches. It includes definitions, guidelines, and recommendations on the primary functions of a coach; roles and responsibilities of a coach in athlete development; qualifications, knowledge and core competences needed for coaching effectively; and methods by which coaches are educated, developed and certified. In doing so it aims to be responsive to the needs of different sports, countries, organisations and institutions and provides benchmarks for the recognition and certification of coaches. Organisations around the world will be able to use this document as a useful guide, one that can be applied fully or in part to suit the needs and context of each user. It can also be used to evaluate existing systems and report on the findings towards developing stronger programmes in the future.
Though we believe this document is a big step forward, we will continue to research and evaluate each element of the Framework and consider all feedback as we seek to refine it in the forthcoming years. Version 2.1 is planned for release at Global Coaches House in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
