International Coaching Degree Standards launched in Köln

After a 12-month process, including two world-wide expert consultations, the International Council for Coaching Excellence (ICCE) launched the International Sport Coaching Degree Standards (ICDS) in Köln on 14th October 2016.

A growing number of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) around the world have started to offer and deliver full or partial Sport Coaching Bachelor Degrees as the role of coach has evolved and coaching moves towards professionalisation. As the global cooperative body leading and supporting the development of coaching, ICCE recognise this, and have led on development of the ICDS, flexible guidelines which will help develop high quality, suitable courses and delivery programmes to develop the next generation of coaches at graduate level.

Next steps include the development of voluntary evaluation and endorsement process and the creation of a standards governance to manage and review the ICDS every four years starting in 2020 after the Tokyo Olympics.

The ICCE would like to give special thanks to working group Chair Alfonso Jiménez (Coventry University, UK), Project Technical Officer Sergio Lara-Bercial (Leeds Beckett University, UK) and to expert group members at large for their excellent work: Dr Andy Abraham (Leeds Beckett University, UK), Dan Jaspers (formerly ISAF, GBR), John Bales (ICCE, CAN), Dr José Curado (Treinadores Portugal), Dr Kristen Dieffenbach (West Virginia University, USA), Dr Lutz Nordmann (Trainerakademie, GER), Dr Masamitsu Ito (Nippon Sport University, JPN), Olivia Mokgatle (representing South African Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), Pascal Colmaire (World Archery, CHE) and Dr Steven Rynne (University of Queensland, AUS)
