ICCE Board Members present at 10th Portugal Coaching Congress

In 2023, ICCE member Coaching Portugal celebrated the 10th Portugal Coaching Congress with a special edition with the motto “Recognition of the Coach Profession” privileging themes that are transversal to all sports and the Coaching profession!

In partnership with Viana do Castelo, European City of Sports 2023, Coaching Portugal organized the Congress in Centro Cultural de Viana do Castelo, on the 3rd and 4th of June and brought together in presence and online coaches from all sports!

One of the most important moments of the 10th Congress was the tribute to Jorge Braz, national futsal coach, World, European and Intercontinental champion with the Portuguese team. Soon after, Braz caught the audience attention talking about “Coach Communication and Leadership” and said one of the main key phrases of the Congress: “We only exist to serve others. This is perhaps the coach main mission”. Pedro Sequeira, President of Coaching Portugal and Lorraine Lafreniere, CEO of Coaching Association of Canada presented the panel “Coach: Recognition of the Profession” where Pedro presented the Coaching Portugal strategic plan for 2022/32 and Lorraine presented the Canadian reality. “The Youth Coach” brought together 4 coaches – Nuno Silva, Cristina Gomes, João Simões and Paulo Sá (moderator) – to talk about working with young athletes into adulthood. On the next session, “Legal regime of the Coaching Profession” 3 lawyers – Miguel Fernandes (moderator), Sónia Carneiro and José Ricardo Gonçalves – discussed the contours of creating the legislative package linked to Coaches. A talk about “How Coaches develop skills for the job market”, with 2 recruitment specialists – Joana Russinho and João André Gonçalves with Pedro Sequeira moderating, closed the first day of the Congress.

On the second day, “Being a Coach” was the motto for 3 coaches – Carlos Resende, Alexandre Pinto and Ana Rita Gomes (moderator) – to talk about the skills that they acquired throughout their lives and that helped them become coaches, dual career preoccupation and way to empower athletes. The “Mental Health in Sports” was also the theme of one of the sessions, in which 2 specialists in psychology, Ana Bispo Ramires and Duarte Araújo and 2 top coaches, José Uva e José Braz, spoked about mental health in sport whether in situations with their athletes or with themselves and how they dealt with or should deal with them. In the last session, “The Young Coach”, 4 coaches who started their careers young – Fábio Pereira, Nuno Pereira, José Miguel Araújo e Isabel Teixeira talked about their careers, how they organize themselves with their peers and clubs and the role of agents and academies, with Rui Resende in moderation.

Nuno Perestrelo, former sports journalist and currently Director of Communication for the Sport Integrity Global Alliance, closed the Congress, making, by way of conclusion, a visit to the main ideas that remained from the various panels. After all, almost 400 coaches participated in the Congress, which was very successful!
