CoachLearn Conference Shines in Finland’s Fine Weather

The CoachLearn team travelled to Haaga-Helia University in Vierumaki, Finland, the last week of August 2015 to deliver the first multiplier event of the Erasmus+ funded project. CoachLearn was greeted by an unusual heatwave by Nordic standards which was welcome by all delegates and made enjoying the plush natural environment a total delight.

The event coincided with the International Council for Coaching Excellence’s biennial Global Coach Conference which brought together over 400 delegates from more than 40 countries to share their experiences in coaching and coach education and development.

CoachLearn contributed a number of symposiums and seminars which raised awareness of the topic of coach learning, mobility and employment and moreover increased the profile of the project across Europe and beyond. The showcase piece was a two-hour symposium which provided an introduction to the project, a progress update and outlined what the next two years will look like.

The CoachLearn team was very honoured to welcome Mrs Agata Dziarnowska, Policy Officer for the Sport Unit of the European Commission. Mrs Dziarnowska emphasised the prominent role that sport coaches have to play in the enjoyment, health, employability and economic prospects of European Union citizens. She also provided an update on the latest developments within the European Commission and provided valuable advice to the coaching community.

On completion of its preparation phase, CoachLearn will enter its delivery phase in early 2016. This will lead to the publication of the consultation draft of the European Sport Coaching Framework and the construction of prototype support and development tools.

Project CoachLearn coordinator, Sergio Lara-Bercial (Leeds Beckett University, UK) said: ‘This event gave us a unique opportunity to interact face to face with the people and organisations which will benefit from CoachLearn. Getting their feedback and ideas was inspirational and we will drive them forward over the next couple of years.’
